Desktops

28th November 2005 - One Response

I find that my desktop suffers from over-population. As such it is a drop for any file I cant be bothered to file correctly. However, over the years I have come up with some ways too keep it tidy.

  • Chose a day to each week perform a tidy up – the more often you tidy up the easier it is.
  • Increase the size of desktop icons – When they start overlapping it is time for a clean up.
  • Make more folders on your desktop – File things correctly in temporary folders making it easier during the big clean up.

Coursework

I dont like coursework at the best of times. My time management skills leave a little to be desired. I prefer to spend more time in-front of my little white iBook than with some work. Its a shame as I am sure I have some untapped potential to do well.

Community Spirit

Since I joined this site 2 hours ago I have felt some great community spirit. Everyone seems to be in the same boat. So far I have had more comments on a single entry than ever before. (Yes 2 different people is a record for me) What with the latest links and most active blog things on the dashboard you seem slightly more compelled to see what other people are using the system for. This is great and I am reading content from people I wouldn’t have read from before if I had not entered my email address all those months ago.

There is one problem with this new community though. It is going to be really hard for any one within the community to get any brand identity. With the option of only so many different designs on offer many people have gone for the same one. The quality of the designs is something that is playing tricks with me. With the default Kubrick design it is quite band and plain. With all of the others though, they are quite complicated. This makes you feel that the person using it didn’t just steal it from a free template site. I think a selection of simpler, more bland designs would have worked better. However, as it is I am already confusing people thinking i have read something that I have not.

Wordpess.com Peeves

Well I have now had my account for 30 minuites and I already have a few peves with the system.

  1. For some reason as I subscribed with a gmail acount the profile thing assumes I use my gTalk/Jabber thing. I dont use this and I wouldn’t like that address to be listed in my profile.

  2. On the profile page it seems to type a new password in the password box. I have to remove this to update my password, which is anoying enough. On the top of that though, if I did wish to use the password put in for me it is stared out. So no matter what I want to do on that page i first have to remove that password that has been typed for me. So what is the point?

  3. The link at the bottom of the page saying “Powered by wordpess.com” is wrong. This site isnt powered by wordpress.com. It is hosted on wordpress.com yes but it is powered by mu.wordpess.org. Surely if this is a test for that system, it should be linking to the system in question.

Ok these are only small inperfections that will not cause me any harm. However, that is not the point. I feel that as I have no control to change anything I must rant about it instead. Where I would usually change something I am now forced to look and watch it.

I have never been in a situation where I am not in full control of what goes on. I once tried to use blogger and wordpress and other options on my site. However, as I did not have full control over how the imformation was stored and outputed I scrapped all of them in favor of my own hand written scripts. Ones that I could change and know the inner working of.

Edit:It has since come apparent that the gTalk and Password peeves were nothing to do with the great system. Instead it was my browser trying to be too clever for its own good.
